Jacob Voss, of Linn, a 6-foot-9, 255-pound right-handed relief pitcher, faces the uncertainty of the current baseball season, but he feels good about how the year started, and is anxious to get back to Arizona and his Los Angeles Angels teammates. Last year Voss played with the Orem Owlz.

“I’m just hanging out at home right now, but I’d much rather be playing baseball,” he quipped. “I’ve been able to work out and throw outside to my brother, Drew, but it’s not the same.”

Voss usually works out in Jefferson City or St. Louis, but those options are not available due to the virus.

Voss reported for a weighted ball camp Jan. 12, well ahead of spring training, where he did very well.

“I was kind of surprised at how well I was doing,” said Voss. “I hadn’t done that well in a while.”

On March 6, Voss reported for spring training, but it was a short-lived experience. He had two bullpen pitching outings and then the season was postponed.

“We saw the other leagues canceling games and figured it was just a matter of time before MLB did the same thing,” said Voss.

While he was with the team, there were many conversations about the coronavirus.

“There were 275 guys in two clubhouses, sharing locker rooms and showers,” Voss said. “We kind of figured that if one of us had it, chances were we all had it. I haven’t had any symptoms, so I think it’s okay now, but we were a little worried about it at the time.”

A meeting was held at 10 a.m. March 19, team members were informed of the decision to put the season on hold for what was believed to be eight weeks. At 1 p.m. he was on a flight home.

“They’ve kept in touch with us, and we were looking at going back in the next couple of weeks, but now they’re saying middle of May with a June 1 start is the earliest,” said Voss. “They’re trying to play as fast as possible, with things keep getting pushed back. I really don’t know what to expect.”

If and when the season begins, Voss said he is ready.

“I don’t think the absence will affect me,” he said. “I know what I did earlier this year, and I know what I need to do. I’m looking forward to getting back on the mound.”

In the meantime, he’ll continue to stay active, and as the season nears, he plans to work with Will Robertson, who has likewise been sent home from the Toronto Blue Jays organization.
