ARGYLE — At their meeting on Thursday, Argyle trustees discussed the problems the village had with snow and ice removal during the recent winter storm.
The village had contracted with Doug Deeken to clear the streets in case of inclement weather. Deeken had equipment problems and was not able to clear or treat the streets during the most recent winter storm.
“It was a dicey situation, and I didn’t find out about it until the last minute,” said Mayor Colby Davis.
‘He (Deeken) didn’t tell us,” Trustee Felicia Wieberg added. “He didn’t tell anyone.”
“I think it happened as he was getting geared up for the season; I think he told us as soon as he knew,” Davis said, who went on to explain that Deeken had a problem with the motor on one of his vehicles and would need to have it rebuilt.
Wieberg said that she thought Deeken should have done a better job of keeping trustees informed of the situation.
Davis contacted Dominic Struemph and his crew to get the streets cleared and salted.
“Dominic did great except for the piles of snow and ice at the end of the street by the stop signs,” said Trustee Elizabeth Watring. “They are going to be a problem until they melt.”
She did not remember where the snow had been piled in years past.
Davis said he would contact Struemph and devise a better plan for where to pile the snow if there is another weather event.
“I thought Dominic’s team did a very good job once they got into town,” said Davis. “This was their first time, and it was already a problem before they even got into town.”
Davis said that Struemph’s team will continue to cover duties for Deeken until the end of the season or until he gets his vehicle repaired. Davis assured everyone that moving forward there will be a better plan in place.
Davis also noted that the village may purchase salt in a big bag instead of individual bags if it costs less. He is currently waiting for the estimate.
• All the businesses within the village limits have paid their annual fees and been issued licenses for the year.
• Davis apologized for not having more information on a new village attorney. Davis has been in contact with Attorney Nathan Nickolaus and will reach out to him again to see if he will attend a village meeting to discuss his services with the other trustees.
• December’s financial report showed receipts for general ($4,347.03), and sewer ($3,263.26). Village expenses were general ($3,230.51), and sewer ($3,763.69).
• Argyle had the following ending balances for December: general ($16,302.36), general money market ($59,071.42), sewer ($5,595.72), sewer money market ($30,343.35), and sewer debt service ($31,815.29).
• The next meeting will be on Thursday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m.
