Chamois has no election for city officials

Posted

Chamois voters learned Tuesday they would not be able to cast a ballot for city officials.

According to County Clerk Nicci Kammerich, certified ballot language outlining positions and who filed for them was never received from the city, which means there was nothing to submit to the Secretary of State’s office.

“I know we called at least three times, and left messages, and we never received a reply,” said  Kammerich. “We waited a week after the certification date, but the Secretary of State wanted our certification of elections, and we had to move on without Chamois.”

Chamois Mayor Elise Brochu, who did not file for reelection, said City Clerk Michelle Stanley  is unaware of any messages left by the clerk, and there was no information regarding certification details in a packet she said was sent to the city by the Missouri Ethics Commission.

Kammerich said her office does not send out packets. “Everything they need to know is in the Missouri Revised State Statutes (78.090 and 78.120) that deal with city elections,” she added.

Filing for the position of mayor was Warren Taylor, though he does not live within the city limits.

Chamois has two aldermen positions open, one held by Matt Shockley, who filed to retain his seat, and the other by Debbie Huff, who chose not to run again. No one filed by the deadline as a write-in candidate.

Brochu said she spoke with the Secretary of State’s office for guidance, and was directed to speak with the city’s attorney regarding a special election with a new filing period. Details will be published when they are available.
