Chamois man arrested for vehicle tampering

Duane L. Haslag, 42, of Chamois, was taken into custody Friday after a call at Chamois regarding a peace disturbance.
In a probable cause statement filed by Deputy Dennis Sutton, he noted that a complaint was made by a resident on Vine Street. Haslag reportedly had been across the street from the caller, and had left in a high burst of speed, spewing gravel and nearly hitting a child.
He was driving a red Ford Escape, which he had recently attempted to paint black. The caller told Sutton it was believed the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Columbia.
Haslag was stopped on East Third Street at Chamois, and 911 Dispatch verified the vehicle had been stolen.
He was taken into custody and transported to the Osage County Jail.
Haslag was charged March 20 in Cole County Circuit Court with stealing a motor vehicle and failure to register as a sex offender. He was arraigned July 31 and is scheduled to appear before Judge Cotton Walker Sept. 1.
