Chamois short 3 starters, loses in OT to Vienna by 7

As close games go, last Tuesday’s contest at Chamois was exciting as the Pirates playing without three varsity starters put together an effort that nearly resulted in a win.

However, despite a last-second regulation performance by Nathan Nolte, Chamois fell in overtime, 59-52.

“This was a hard-fought game that saw a lot of young players step up big,” said Coach Klayton Kuschel. “Due to some injuries, we started some younger boys that haven’t had much varsity experience.

I couldn’t be more proud of the way they played.”

Trailing 52-48 with little time on the clock, Nolte was fouled off the ball, but the Vienna player didn’t agree with the call, and that resulted in a technical foul.

Nolte drained all four shots to tie the game, and the Pirates had a chance to win in regulation but missed, and Vienna missed its shot at the buzzer to force OT.

Chamois trailed 9-6 after the first quarter but it was a 24-23 game at the break, with the Eagles maintaining a narrow lead.

“After halftime the guys were playing well, sharing the ball and getting comfortable,” said Coach Kuschel. “In overtime, we
got in foul trouble and some starters fouled out which was the nail in the coffin for us.”

Nolte finished with 21 points and four rebounds to lead the team, as Mason Lamb posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds to go with three assists and a steal, while Caine Schaben added 10 points, three rebounds and there assists, Eli Deppe
scored six, grabbed 12 rebounds, and posted one assist, two steals and a block, and Dawson Haslag finished with five points, two rebounds and two assists.

In a two-quarter JV game, the Pirates lost 30-22.

Lamb led with 10 points to go with eight rebounds and two steals, followed by Zain Slusser (7 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal), Schaben (4 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist), Tyler Brandt (1 point, 1 rebound, 2 steals), and Shannon Cowans (2 rebounds, 1 steal).
