Fatima wasted no time Friday night in establishing a dominance over Vienna, with a 22-8 first quarter setting the stage for a 72-42 season-opening win on the road.

“The guys were anxious to get out and play someone other than themselves,” said Coach Ryan Robertson.

“You never know what to expect on your first night, but overall I thought our defensive effort was there, and I thought offensively we shared the ball extremely well.”

The Comets scored 31 points off turnovers, which is a point more than the final margin, so defensively, Fatima was pretty solid.

“We were able to pressure Vienna and when we did force turnovers, it was nice to see us turn those into points,” said Robertson.

Overall, Fatima hit 39.7% from the floor and 30.3% from three-point range while hitting just 8-17 from the stripe.

“Of course there are areas we have to improve on, and we will address those over the Thanksgiving break, but we’re off to a solid start and hopefully can continue to improve,” said Robertson, whose team held a 40-20 half-time lead.

Brett Warner led the offense with 28 points on 9-14 shooting from the floor, including a 4-7 mark from three-point range. He also hit 6-8 from the FT line, and grabbed five rebounds.

Nate Brandt (13) and Lee Verslues (12) also hit double figures on the night, the former recording a trey while Verslues had two to go with a team-high six assists. Cole Lehmen scored nine with one three-pointer and led with six rebounds. Also scoring were Jacob Vanderfeltz (7), Leo Peters (2) and Dawson Huhn (1).

Werner, Huhn and Brandt added two assists each, with one more from Vanderfeltz.

Also collecting rebounds were Verslues (4), Luke Boyce (3), Brandt (3), Peters and Vanderfeltz (2 each) and Carter Karst and Huhn (1 apiece).

Defensively, Brandt was very effective with six steals, as Verslues added five steals and a block, Jon Dickneite and Vanderfeltz each snagged two steals, and Peters, Werner and C.

Lehmen each had one.

In the JV game, Fatima won 56-50 as Cooper Kleffner scored a teamhigh 16 points.

“It’s nice to get first game under our belt,” said Coach Jeff Adamson. “The kids have been practicing very hard the past few weeks, and it was nice to get out and see where we are as a team.”

Blake Gentges added seven pints, and Jacob

Schulte finished with six.
