Fatima’s soccer team improved to 10-6 following Monday’s 5-0 win over Laquey at home.

“After the last game at Southern Boone, it was nice to find the net and score some goals,” said Coach Matt Eisterhold. “That’s been a struggle for us lately. We scored early and often in the first half, with Trey Herzing scoring two, putting his season total at 15 goals. Joseph Schwartz picked up his sixth shutout of the year and has been playing awesome in goal.”

Herzing jump-started the offense with a goal just 2:56 into the game on a feed from Blake Gentges, who scored a goal at 11:30 in the first half on an assist from Felix Treude.

Herzing made it a 3-0 game as Herzing found the net at 19:18 with help from Dean Laughlin, and at 21:58, Sam Gentges scored with an assist from Blake Gentges.

Leading 4-0 at the break, the Comets returned to action in the second and scored at the 21:24 mark as Treude took a feed from Blake Gentges and buried the ball in the back of the net.

Fatima took 28 shots on the night, with 17 on goal, and six corner kicks. Schwartz finished with eight saves. Against Southern Boone on Friday, the Comets suffered a 1-0 loss.

“We came out with a very specific game plan against a very good Southern Boone team,” said Eisterhold. “They came into the contest ranked #3 in the state. We knew they were very good, and we knew our chances would be limited. The boys bought into the game plan well and worked their butts off. I am always so pleased with the boys’ efforts and commitment to the team.

It’s amazing to hear other coaches game after game tell me that our boys really work hard for me..That makes my job easier when I’ve got that work ethic. It was a total team effort tonight.

Again, with facing a very good team like SoBoCo, opportunities are going to be limited compared to other games. We did have our chances offensively but we couldn’t find the net. The momentum shifted a bit towards the end of the game, but ultimately we ran out of time. It was a tough loss after being so close, but I commend the boys’ effort. Credit to Southern Boone; they are a legitimate #3 in the state.”

Schwartz posted 15 saves on the night.
