Fatima wins two on Saturday

Fatima’s softball team claimed victory in two games on Saturday, defeating Chillicothe and Iberia at home.

“We played two really great teams, and it took the whole team to win,” said Coach Ashlee Schnieders. “Both teams are well coached and have some great players, so the girls knew they had to come out playing their best and put runs on the board. Mia (Kliethermes) and Ava (Heckemeyer) threw very well in the circle.”

In the late game, the Lady Comets won by playing small ball. All nine of their hits were singles, and five runs were driven in on the day.

Fatima plated two in the first, four in the fifth, and two in the sixth while holding Chillicothe to one run on one unearned hit.

Elise Dickneite led with three hits as Madelyn Backes added two with a pair of RBI, and Kristen Robertson (RBI), Kinzey Woody (RBI), Kliethermes (RBI), and Megan Gabelsberger each had one.

Heckemeyer started the game and, in three innings, struck out two and walked two, with the unearned run coming on one hit. In three innings of relief, Kliethermes struck out four and walked one.

In the early game, Fatima defeated Iberia 7-4.

Woody went 2-4 with a double and her 10th home run of the year, a three-run shot in the sixth to all but put the game away. She has 41 career home runs to hold the all-time Fatima HR record.

The Lady Comets opened with a run in the first and added two in the third and one in the fifth before Woody’s round-tripper.

With time running out due to the nature of the three-team gathering, Iberia scored four runs in the top of the seventh before Fatima shut the Lady Rangers down.

Backes also had two hits, a double, and an RBI. Robertson (triple, RBI),Sydney Scheppers (double), Gabelsberger, and Kliethermes each added a hit.

In the circle, Kliethermes allowed four earned runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and a walk over seven innings for the win.

On Wednesday of last week, Fatima defeated North Callaway on the road, 6-1, in a 13-hit performance.

Robertson had a team-best 4-4 day at the plate with a double. Kliethermes and Eva Wildhaber added two hits apiece, and Gabelsberger (double), Dickneite, Backes, Lilly Cunningham, and Woody each provided a single.

Kliethermes was solid from the rubber as she allowed just one earned run on five hits with six strikeouts and no walks.
