Fatima’s girls’ soccer off to best start in recorded history

The Fatima Lady Comets soccer squad found the back of the net eight times last week, bringing the team to a 6-4 season record – making this year’s start the best the program has seen in recorded history. After 10 games, the defense has only allowed an average of 1.6 goals per contest, which is tied for the second-best defensive presence in team history.

“This team is putting in the work to get the results this year, and it’s great to see that extra effort paying off,” said Coach Dustin Cox. “We’re proud of our record so far, but records come and go. The best part is seeing the individual players developing – that improvement will last for multiple seasons. Many started playing soccer at the Knights of Columbus fields, and today they’re dominating the high school fields.”

Junior Hannah Heisler scored five goals for the week, bringing her season total to nine. Senior Megan Borgmeyer and freshman Alex Berhorst scored one apiece last week.

Thus far on the season, Heisler has a team-high three assists, Borgmeyer and Kristen Robertson each have two, and Berhorst and Avery Brandt have recorded one apiece.

“On the offensive side of the ball, we saw some of our most creative plays and strongest finishes of the season against Crocker and Boonville,” said Coach Sami Jo Freeman. “We’ve rotated players throughout our offense to find the right chemistry. That has given us tremendous flexibility in player positioning and options to adapt mid-game.”

Junior Chloe Adamson made more than 20 saves as goalkeeper against Crocker and Southern Boone, and senior Kendall Gerling had 15 saves as goalkeeper against Boonville.

Fatima lost to Southern Boone last week, 3-0, due in part to injuries, but remains undefeated against Class 1 teams.
