Fatima’s starting five put together a great game Thursday against Owensville as the quintet at one point had scored 56 of 58 points and finished with 60 of 66 points in a 66-46 win.

“This was an absolute boat race of a game,” said Coach Matt Baker. “Both teams pressed the entire night and we did a great job of picking and choosing our spots.”

Fatima shot 50% (8-16) from three-point range and controlled the glass (30-22), which allowed the Lady Comets to pull away in the second half.

“This game was really decided by our starting five,” said Baker. “At one point our starting five had 56 of our 58 points. It was also a big game for district seeding. I was really pleased with our effort.”

Ellie Brune led the team with 16 points as Alli Robertson and Karli Struemph each added 13, Morgan Luebbering put in 11, and Lauren Brandt scored seven as the starters controlled the game.

“Ellie played the best game of her young career and we hope that this game will carry forward for her,” said Baker. “Karli was also instrumental to our win in this game. She played in the middle of our press-break all night and made quality decisions with the basketball which led to easy buckets and quality looks for us.”

Brune and Robertson each drained three treys on the night as Brandt, and Struemph put in one apiece.

After a 10-2 start, the Lady Comets were hot, adding 19 in the second for a 29-17 lead at the break. Equally strong in the third quarter, Fatima put 25 points on the board and took a 52-34 lead into the fourth quarter.

Also scoring were Lydia Brunnert (4), and Dani Stegeman (2). In the assists column, Robertson posted three while Brune and Brandt each had two, and Luebbering and Emma Bower finished with one apiece.

Struemph’s seven rebounds led the team as Luebbering grabbed five, Robertson, Brandt, and Brune posted four each, and Stegeman, Bower, Brunnert, and Hurst added one apiece.

On the defensive end, Luebbering counted a pair of steals, and Stegeman, Claire Bexten, Struemph, Brunnert, and Taylor Bexten posted one apiece. Luebbering and Brune also had a block each.

In the JV game, Fatima won 53-33.

“This was great all-around basketball from the girls, especially everyone getting involved in scoring on the offensive end,” said Coach John Fick. “All the girls worked their tail-ends off on the defensive end so it’s nice to see them get rewarded on the offensive side of things.”

Brunnert led with 13 points as Lucy Crede scored 11, followed by Claire Bexten (8), Elizabeth Dickneite and Caleigh Huot (4 each), Bower, Kaitlyn Plassmeyer, and Chloe Adamson (3 each), and Anna Eichholz, and Ella Scheulen (2 apiece).

Against California last Monday, Fatima pulled out a 61-55 win.

“This was the first time we’ve beaten California in my tenure,” said Coach Baker. “We started slowly in this game but really came alive in the second quarter. I was extremely pleased with the girls’ willingness to follow our game plan all night. We had great contributions from our bench so it was a true team win. California was deadset on denying Lauren the ball and that opened up our other shooters, and Morgan inside.”

Luebbering had a monster game with 25 points to lead the Lady Comets. “She really asserted herself inside and carried us offensively,” said Baker.

Bower added eight points to the mix while Struemph scored seven, T. Bexten and Brune each put in six, Brandt had four, Hurst and Plassmeyer posted two apiece, and Robertson finished with one.

Stegeman and Struemph shared the assists lead with three each, while Luebbering, Brune, and Brandt added two apiece, and Bower, Struemph, and T. Bexten each had one.

Robertson and Brune led the defense with a pair of steals each, as Luebbering counted two blocks.

The JV Fatima lady Comets beat California 39-28.

“The girls had another great night offensively,” said Coach Fick. “They were able to knock down open shots and never tried to force anything. As a team, the ladies made five three-pointers. As the season progresses for these young ladies, they are getting better at executing plays and getting to the rim; they always seem like they are in attack mode and if they get stopped they find an open girl to pass it to.”

Defensively, California moved the ball extraordinary well and kept getting the Lady Comets out of position. “We were fortunate enough that their shots just weren’t going in early in the game and we were able to secure the defensive rebound,” said Fick. “We aren’t the biggest team around, so for us, limiting teams to only one possession every trip down is crucial.”

Crede led with nine points, followed by Dickneite (7), Anna Eichholz and Plassmeyer (6 each), Brunnert (5), and Bower, and C. Bexten (3 apiece).
