For the Record

Tuesday of last week, Oct. 1, was an eventful day. That was the day Iran launched 181 missiles at Israel and that was also the day the vice-presidential candidates debated.

There are two very important takeaways concerning those events.

First, let’s look at the missiles. Joe Biden took considerable credit for the fact the U.S. military helped shoot down a number of the missiles. That takes an enormous amount of hubris for Biden because for decades he and other Democrats were strongly opposed to the development of our country’s missile defense program.

Turn back the clock 41 years to 1983. The president was Ronald Reagan and he proposed a Strategic Defense Initiative, designed to protect this country from missile attacks by our enemies. The Democrats and media went ballistic when Reagan made his proposal.  The scorn they heaped on Reagan was incredible. They said the idea wouldn’t work. They called it “Star Wars.” No one heaped more sneering ridicule on Reagan than Joe Biden.

Here’s what Joe the genius had to say in 1986: “’Star Wars’ represents a fundamental assault on the concepts, alliances and arms-control agreements that have buttressed American security for several decades, and the president’s continued adherence to it constitutes one of the most reckless and irresponsible acts in the history of modern statecraft.”

Reagan proposed his missile defense system in a televised speech to the nation in March, 1983. The American people loved the concept, but Democrats opposed the idea for decades. When he was president, Bill Clinton killed the program.

Good ideas die hard. Eventually America developed a missile defense system that has proven to be quite successful. The Israeli Iron Dome is based on our technology and is the only thing that has prevented the annihilation of Israel.

Now, let’s look at the debate for a moment. I thought I heard Sen. Vance accuse the Democrats of allowing 25 million illegal immigrants into the country. The BBC (formerly known as British Broadcasting Corporation) quoted Vance as saying 20-25 million. Whatever Vance said, his statement went unchallenged last Tuesday. Gov. Walz did not question it. The CBS moderators did not question it.

When you vote, keep in mind Reagan’s support for our nation’s missile defense system was not “one of the most reckless and irresponsible acts in the history of modern statecraft.” Quite the contrary, it was one of the best decisions ever made by an American president and Democrats hated the idea.

I cannot think of anything President Biden and Vice President Harris could have done to cause more harm to this country than to allow the entry of 20-25 million illegal immigrants. Republicans hate the idea.

Can we recover from the harm caused by Biden and Harris? I don’t have the answer for that, but we certainly cannot allow Harris to continue this policy four more years.
