BELLE — Belle High School Principal Garrett Haslag received the South-Central Principal of the Year Award on April 25 as voted on by the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals (MOASSP).

“Receiving this award was an emotional and deeply humbling experience,” said Haslag, Belle’s high school principal for the past five years. “Being a leader in public education comes with many challenges and to feel recognized and appreciated affirmed that the work I’m doing is making a positive impact.”

Haslag added that the most challenging aspect of being a high school principal is conflict resolutions.

“It can be difficult to address every situation effectively while maintaining a supportive environment for all parties such as staff, students, and community stake-holders,” Haslag said.

He earned his B.S. in physical education at Williams Woods University, where he was also a member of the baseball team. Haslag also completed his Master’s Degree in education at Williams Woods University.

Haslag, who earned an Education Specialist Degree in Executive Superintendency from the University of Missouri, said he decided to pursue a career in education because he had an incredible number of mentors and teachers throughout his own education.

“My passion for sports also played a role,” Haslag said. “Pursuing a career in education allowed me to coach while also making a meaningful impact on the lives of the students.”

Haslag couldn’t be happier with his role as the Maries County R-2 high school principal. “From the moment, I stepped into this role, the communities of Belle and Bland welcomed me as one of their own,” Haslag said. “The unwavering support I’ve received over the years has been truly irreplaceable.”

Haslag is especially grateful to the Maries County R-2 Superintendent Dr. Lenice Basham, as well the Maries County R-2 School Board.

“Their consistent support, encouragement, and high expectations have helped shape both my personal growth and the success of the school,” Haslag said. “Working in alignment with them has made the journey all the more impactful.”

Haslag was also thankful to the teachers and staff, noting that they are the backbone of the school.

While Haslag loves working in Maries County, he lives in Osage County with his wife and two children.

“A big thank you to my wife, children and my family for their unwavering support,” Haslag said. “The long hours and time away from home can be difficult, but this job wouldn’t be possible without their love, patience, and understanding.”

Haslag believes it is a privilege to work with students every day and help shape their future. “The most rewarding aspect of my job is witnessing students succeed, both during their time at Belle High School and beyond,” he said. “Supporting their growth and celebrating their achievements in all areas of life brings me the greatest sense of fulfillment.”
