Howard Simon Schneider, 93, Jefferson City,  passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital.

He was born Nov. 5, 1931, the only child of the late William Fred and Anna Charlotte (Schwegler) Schneider at his great-grandfather’s home near Mount Sterling.

He was a 1949 graduate of Linn High School before being drafted into the U.S. Army. Howard courageously served his country during the Korean War from 1952 until his honorable discharge in October 1954.

Upon his return to the states, Howard attended trade school through the G.I. Bill and began his career in the automotive repairs industry.

He met Joyce Brinkmann not long after his return and they were united in marriage in 1951. To this union, two children were born. She preceded him in death in 1960.

In 1961, Howard was united in marriage to Gloria Isaline (Gawer) LaBoe, and the couple moved their family to Jefferson City when he accepted a position at the Jefferson City Ford Dealership. Over the course of 30 years, he steadily advanced within the company, ultimately retiring as the Service Manager in the repairs department.

Howard and Gloria cherished their many trips to Branson, eagerly packing up their camper several times a year to enjoy music shows and spend quality time together. When their children were younger, they took multiple trips to St. Louis to indulge in the theatre scene, nurturing their shared love of live entertainment. The couple shared 54 wonderful years of marriage until her passing Oct. 12, 2015.

Being raised on a farm by his grandfather and father, Howard felt a deep connection with the land and nature all throughout his life. He gained invaluable skills and knowledge that served him well throughout his life. Whether tending to crops or raising cattle, his passion for farming was both deep and enduring. Along with farming, Howard was passionate about deer hunting and had several prized trophy bucks adorning his walls.

A man of steadfast faith, Howard was a devoted and active member of Central Church, where he built many cherished friendships over the years. He was also a proud member of the VFW Basinger/Sone Memorial Post 1003, sharing a deep sense of patriotism with his fellow veterans.

Howard’s strong character and admittedly abrasive nature made him unforgettable in ways both good and bad. His personality was one of a kind and he was equally loved, feared, and cherished by those who knew him.

Howard was preceded in death by first wife, Joyce; second wife, Gloria; parents, William and Anna; and beloved pup and best friend, Lucy.

He is survived by children, Roger Schneider and wife Doris and Lea Ann Schneider Volkerding and husband Grant, both of Jefferson City; stepchildren, Nancy LaBoe Ash of Hazelwood and Jeannine LaBoe Rogers and husband John of San Diego, Calif.; grandchildren, Amy Chen and husband Bobby, Elizabeth and Amanda Schneider, Heather Cianciolo and husband Dominic, Benjamin Ash, John Rogers and Paul Rogers and wife Kelli; great-grandchildren, Tyler Chen and Lily and Thatcher Harrison; and step-grandchildren, Jason and Jack Volkerding and Anna Nash.

The funeral service was held Monday, April 7, at Central Church in Jefferson City with the Reverend Jason Abbott officiating. Private graveside services with military honors were held at the Owensville City Cemetery.

Memorial contributions suggested to VFW Basinger/Sone Memorial Post 1003 or Central Church.
