Joyce Diane Symmonds, 85, passed away Sunday April 6, 2025. Joyce had fought a long and courageous battle against the ravages of Parkinson’s disease. She died peacefully at home accompanied by her husband of 62 yrs, James Symmonds.
She was born Dec. 5, 1939, to the late Harry and Lois (Brandes) Hopkins in Coffeyville, Kan.
She was a 1957 graduate of Jefferson City High School and earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Lincoln University.
Joyce taught several primary grades in her early career at Linn R-2 schools but spent the majority of her career teaching reading. It was not unusual for former students to approach Joyce and thank her for giving them the gift of reading and the joy of books.
She was active in community affairs and served two terms as a member of the board of the Osage County Historical Society. Joyce was also active in the Osage County Players and one of the founding members of the Linn Women’s club.
She enjoyed hiking with her husband Jim in Colorado, gardening and was an animal lover.
Joyce was preceded in death by parents, Harry and Lois; brother, Dale Hopkins; and sister, Sharon West.
She is survived by husband, James; son, James “Jamie” Symmonds and wife Martha of Holcomb, Kan.; daughter, Michelle Morin and husband Todd of Carmel, Ind.; six grandchildren;three great-grandchildren; brother, Wayne Hopkins of San Diego, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date for friends and family. The family wishes to thank Compassus Hospice for the competence and concern they showed to Joyce. The family would also like to thank Sandy Mantle, Jenna Weiberg and Connie Fischer for the loving care they provided to her.
