Kleffner pitches beauty as Fatima smacks Borgia, 13-1
Fatima pitcher Brody Kleffner threw a complete game on 85 pitches and gave up just one unearned run last Tuesday as the Fatima Comets defeated St. Francis Borgia, 13-1.
“The offense showed up nicely with double-digit hits and runs,” said Coach Tyler VanGerpen. “If it weren’t for a couple of errors on defense, we would’ve put together a complete game with all phases playing well.”
Kleffner allowed three hits and finished with four strikeouts and no walks.
Colten Scheulen (3-4, 2 RBI) and Blake Kliethermes (3-5, 3 RBI) led the offense as Fatima scored early and often on the road.
Cody Schwartze (1-3) opened the game by reaching second on an error, and Bryce Wieberg (1-4, RBI) drew a walk. Scheulen doubled Schwartze home and pushed Wieberg to third. Glenn Berhorst (1-4, RBI) plated Wieberg on a groundout as Scheulen made his way to third. Two batters later, Trevor Schulte (2-5, 3 RBI) delivered an RBI single to give Fatima a 3-0 lead.
In the second, the Comets continued their onslaught with five more runs. Matthew “Munch” Robertson (2-3, triple, RBI) walked to lead off and moved to second on a Max Stuecken (1-4) single. Both advanced on a double steal and then moved up on a passed ball that scored Robertson. Wieberg drove in Stuecken and moved Schwartze, who had walked, to third. Just like that, it was a 6-0 score, and Fatima wasn’t done.
Scheulen’s groundout delivered another run but put two outs on the board. Berhorst, B. Kliethermes, Schulte, and Logan Kliethermes (1-5, RBI) each singled to plate two more.
With a 10-1 lead going into the seventh, Fatima plated three more runs.
