From start to finish, the Chamois Lady Pirates dominated their Class 1, District 9 opener Saturday against Jamestown, winning 57-32 to advance to the semifinal game today (Wednesday) at Capital City High School. “This was a good game,” said Coach John Leach.

“The girls did a good job on defense and shot the ball pretty well. I’m very proud of them for getting to the semis.”

After a 21-5 opening quarter, the Lady Pirates continued to pressure the ball, creating turnovers and scoring opportunities, while holding the Lady Eagles to just six points in each the second and third quarters.

MaKenna Wuelling led Chamois wit 20 points, hitting a pair of three-pointers and going 2-3 from the line, as Katie Keilholz added one trey and a 2-3 mark from the stripe on her way to 19 points. Alexis Slusser added eight, while Claire Brandt put in five, Ariel Owens scored three, and Abby Keilholz finished with two. K. Keilholz led with three assists and Owens added another.

On the glass, Slusser’s seven rebounds paced the team, as K. Keilholz snagged five, Wuelling and Brandt posted four each, and Chloe Holloway and Owens each grabbed three.

Defensively, Wuelling and K. Keilholz counted five steals each and Slusser added three, while Brandt had the team’s lone block.

Chamois ended the regular season with a 60-29 win over Tuscumbia on Thursday.

“What a great end to the regular season,” said Leach. “This is the best we’ve shot all year, and we have a positive attitude going into districts.”

There was little doubt after Chamois raced to a 21-7 lead through the first quarter, and extended it to 37-16 at the break.

K. Keilholz claimed the scoring lead in this one with 24 points, with four treys to her credit on the night, as Wuelling also hit four three-pointers and posted 18 points to go with 10 assists for a double-double. Slusser added eight, Brandt scored four, and Owens, A. Keilholz and Veronica Slack each put in two. K. Keilholz added five assists to the tally, and Alex McKague and Slusser each posted one.

Rebounding efforts were led by Brandt (8), followed by Wuelling, K. Keilholz and Slusser (4 each), as Owens, McKague and A. Keilholz counted two apiece, and Holloway and Slack finished with one apiece.

In Tuesday’s game against Fatima, the Lady Pirates lost 34-23.

“In this game we played pretty good defense but had a bad game shooting the ball,” said Leach.

The game was tight through the first half, with Fatima holding a 17-12 lead. In the third, the Lady Comets pushed ahead with a 10-5 edge and won the fourth 7-6.

K. Keilholz led the Lady Pirates with 11 points, with the team’s only three-pointer, as Wuelling added five, Slusser scored four, Holloway added two, and Brandt finished with one.

Slusser led with seven rebounds, Wuelling and K. Keilholz recorded five apiece, followed by Slack (2), and Owens, Holloway and Brandt (1 each).
