Lady Pirates put up a great fight but end year in sectional

The Chamois Lady Pirates saw their season come to an end last Tuesday night at Harrisburg, where they lost to Community R-6 in the sectional round.

“We played well in the first half, but couldn’t get anything going in the second half,” said Coach John Leach, whose team finished the year with a mark of 15-10 after the 61-39 loss.

Overall, Chamois hit 29.7% from the floor, with a 3-12 mark from threepoint range (25%) and a 14-17 performance at the free-throw line (82.4%).

“When we were fouled and went to the line, the girls were very effective,” said Coach Leach.

Katie Keilholz, who posted a team-high 18 points, went 8-8 from the stripe, while MaKenna Wuelling was 6-6 from the line as part of her 16 points.

Keilholz hit two treys and Wuelling had one.

“They did a pretty good job of containing Katie and Mac, which was to be expected,” said Leach.

“Community is a good team and there’s a reason they were the number one team in the state. They did not give us any easy shots.”

That containment made it tough to break open as the Lady Pirates did in the district championship game, and other scoring options were limited as well, as Alexis Slusser scored four and Chloe Holloway finished with two. Slusser led with two assists, while Ariel Owens, Wuelling and Claire Brandt each added one.

On the glass, Chamois collected 21 rebounds on the night while Community posted 32. For the Lady Pirates, Slusser’s seven boards were tops, with five more by Wuelling, followed by Owens (4), Keilholz (3), and Holloway and Brandt (1 each).

Defensively, Keilholz recorded three steals and two blocks, while Slusser picked up a steal, and Wuelling posted a block.

Overall, Leach is pleased.

“I’m very proud of the effort we gave and our will to win,” he said. “We came up short, but it’s been a great season for Chamois girls basketball, and I’m happy with the way the girls played.”
