The Linn girls rebounded back after two tough losses in their home tournament last week, with a 47-17 win in Friday’s consolation game against Capital City.

“They played with a lot of energy,” said Coach Brandi Moore. “We have been talking a lot about how great teams are great communicators. I am very proud of how engaged and supportive our bench was during the entire game.”

After staking to a fivepoint lead to start the second, Linn went on a tear in the second, outscoring CC 17-4 for a 24-6 halftime lead.

While Linn hit 42.2% from the floor, the Lady Cats held Capital City to just 15.2% shooting, including just five field goals overall.

Linn covered 7-10 from the FT line, and scored 21 transition points off 24 turnovers.

“The girls hard work on defense generated those turnover points,” said Moore.

Aushara Hostetler, who was named to the All-Tournament team, hit a trey and went 2-2 from the line on her way to a team-high 15 points, as Claire Baker scored all 12 of her points from the short floor. Also scoring were Lindsey Brandt (6), followed by Lexie Heidbrink (trey, 5), Jessica Keilholz (4), Autumn Baker (2), Nicole Deeken (2) and Rachel Keilholz (1). In the assists column, Brandt led with five, and she also grabbed a team-high five rebounds.

Defensively, Hostetler recorded three steals as Baker and Brandt each added two. Deeken had the team’s lone block.

In the semifinals against South Callaway, Linn started off slow against a very athletic team en route to a 55-28 loss on Thursday.

“We clawed back into the game in the second quarter,” said Moore, as Lady Cats outscored SC by three points, but they faced a 26-14 deficit at the break.

“Their defensive pressure made it hard for us to get into a flow on offense. Our freshmen, Autumn Baker and Aushara Hostetler, played really well.”

Hostetler finished the game with nine points, including a three-pointer, five rebounds, and one steal while Baker added six points, two rebounds and a steal. C. Baker added six points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal, while Brandt put in five points  while grabbing two boards, with two assists, and Heidbrink scored two with two rebounds and two steals.

Linn held a 23-15 lead at the break, but Newburg came out firing in the third, using a 22-8 advantage to take a 37-31 lead going into the fourth. From there, a 17-10 edge in the final period put the game out of reach in a 54-41 loss for the Lady Wildcats.

“Newburg’s defense disrupted our ability to get organized on offense,” said Moore. “But Aushara gave us some good minutes off the bench, scoring several times out of our press offense.”

Hostetler led the offense with 14 points, including a pair of three-pointers, as she grabbed five rebounds.

Alexis Wolfe hit four from the floor and went 2-2 from the line for 10 points as she grabbed five rebounds, and posted an assist and a steal.
