Linn’s girls’ and boys’ track teams finished eighth and ninth, respectively, at the Fayette Relays on Thursday.
Genna Haslag was the Lady Cats’ lone medalist, earning second in the 3200m run (14:14.41) to lead the team. Haslag also ran a leg of the fourth-place 4x800 (11:56.42) with Ruby Herndon, Shayla Burnett, and Kylie Messenger, and the 4x400 team of Nevaeh Ames, Charlie Lenger, and Herndon finished fourth in 5:00.48.
“We had a strong showing and faced tough competition from several larger schools,” said Coach Jennifer Bish. “The elevated level of competition brought out the best in many of our athletes, and it was encouraging to see them rise to the occasion with impressive performances, personal records, and continued growth.”
Haslag improved her time in the 3200m run and came very close to reaching her personal goal, while Elyse Brandt also improved her time in the 3200m (7, 16:01.26), showing solid progress in distance events.
Bish noted that Lenger and Brandt turned in faster times than in previous meets in the 1600m run.
“In the 800m run, Kylie Messenger and Shayla Burnett showed great improvement as well, continuing to gain confidence and strength in the middle-distance events,” said Bish.
The boys’ team, meanwhile, scored in all four relays. In the 4x100, the team of Kahne Brandt, Carson Kliethermes, Titus Black, Cody Heckman posted a fourth-place time of 48.66; the 4x200 team of Brandt, Black, Nelson, and Tommy Scheulen finished fifth (1:41.50); Nelson, Brandt, Franken, and Andrew Ely posted a seventh-place time of 4:16.82 in the 4x400; and the 4x800 team of Reid Baker, Andrew Rotter, Jackson Hamburg, and Franken placed seventh in 10:08.58.
“The boys’ 4x200 relay had a promising debut, running well together in their first attempt as a group,” said Bish. “Tommy Scheulen, who ran anchor, unfortunately suffered a hip injury near the end of his leg but pushed through to finish the race. That injury also sidelined him for the boys’ 4x100, but Carson Kliethermes stepped up as an alternate and ran a strong leg to help the team stay competitive.”
