As the Third District of Missouri approaches the start of a new school year, excitement and anticipation fill the air. From the rolling hills of Gasconade County to the streets of Jefferson City, our communities are buzzing with preparations for the return to the classroom. In every town and area across the district, teachers, parents, and students are working together to ensure a successful year ahead.
Whether you’re a parent sending your child off to their first day of kindergarten or their last day of high school, this time of year is a whirlwind of emotions and activity. From selecting that perfect first-day outfit to packing a lunch full of Missouri-grown apples, back-to-school season is a special time for all families. And while I may not be headed back to school myself, as a grandparent, I always cherish that first call from one of my grandchildren, eager to share stories about their day at one of our district’s many great schools.
A successful school year doesn’t just happen—it requires careful planning and preparation. As summer comes to a close and we soak up those last few days at the Lake, now is the perfect time to focus on essential back-to-school tasks. Most classrooms have specific supply lists—whether it’s notebooks, pencils, or folders—so be sure to review and purchase these items early at one of our many local stores, or small businesses. In addition to gathering supplies, now is also the time to schedule routine health check-ups. Make sure your child is ready for the year with a visit to local healthcare providers for eye exams, dental check-ups, and any necessary vaccinations.
The night before school begins is a critical time that can set the tone for the entire year. Establishing a solid bedtime routine is crucial for your child’s health and academic performance. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, adequate sleep is essential for improving attention, behavior, learning, and overall well-being. To help your child wind down, ensure all screens are turned off 30 minutes before bedtime, and keep electronic devices out of the bedroom. Involving your child in preparing for the next day can also be beneficial. Encourage them to help pack their lunch—perhaps with some Missouri-grown produce—and prepare their school bag the night before to reduce morning stress.
In our fast-paced lives, it’s easy to overlook the importance of in-person meetings, but Parent-Teacher Night is an invaluable opportunity to connect with your child’s educators. Whether you’re attending in Wentzville or Washington, this event allows you to introduce yourself, learn about the teacher’s background and teaching philosophy, and discuss the upcoming year. Establishing this connection early on creates a foundation of communication and collaboration, which is critical to your child’s success.
Parental involvement is not just beneficial, it’s essential. Strong families are the cornerstone of strong communities, and this begins with being actively involved in our children’s education. Whether it’s joining the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) in St. Charles, volunteering in the classroom in Montgomery City, or attending school events in St. Thomas, your participation makes a difference. The PTA offers a platform for parents to collaborate on school initiatives, from fundraising to organizing events. Teachers across our district welcome parent volunteers to assist with activities, field trips, or special projects. This support not only helps the school but also allows you to play a direct role in your child’s educational experience.
At the heart of all these efforts is the understanding that education is the foundation of our children’s future. A strong educational foundation opens doors to countless opportunities and equips our children with the critical thinking, creativity, and perseverance they need to thrive in a competitive world.
As we embark on this new school year, let’s work together to create an environment where our children can succeed. It’s our responsibility, as parents, teachers, and community members, to ensure that every child in Missouri’s Third District has the chance to reach their full potential. Whether it’s through careful preparation, consistent routines, or active involvement, every effort we make contributes to their success.
Here’s to a successful, rewarding, and memorable school year!
