The Maries County Soil and Water Conservation District recently announced it wanted to recognize the achievements of the entries in the 2021 annal poster, essay, and photo contest winners.

The usual annual meeting of the conservation district was not held in the spring of 2021 due to the Covid-19 coronavirus. Yet there were entries in the contest and they were judged, but the winners were not publicized.

Brittany Long, District Specialist I of the Maries County SWCD said, “We know you all put in a lot of hard work and dedication, making it a tough decision to pick our winners.”

The 2021 theme was “Healthy Forests=Healthy Communities.” There were 84 entries to the poster contest, seven entries were sent in for the essay contest, and six entries were entered in the photo contest. Long said they want to say thank you to all those who submitted an item in the contests.

First place winners received $15, second place $10, and third place $5. The Maries County Bank graciously donated all of the prize money for the contests.

The grand prize poster winner was Aspen Gorman, who also was the first place winner for fifth grade.

Other winners included third grade Katie Kloeppel-first, Claire Neier-second, and Tyler Hallahan-third.

For fourth grade, Jake Rowden-first, Shawn Freeman-second, and Grace Veasman-third.

For fifth grade Aspyn Gorman-first, Faith Carmody-second, and Zach Kleffner-third.

For sixth grade, Gracelyn Wittje-first, Kaylee Bresnahan-second, and Brett Welschmeyer-third.

There were no essay contest entries in the ninth/tenth and eleventh/twelfth divisions.

There were six entries in the photo contest. In the youth division, Aubrey Schwartze won in two categories. In the Trees/Plants/Landscapes category she won $25 with a photo titled Morning Rays. In the Wildlife category, Schwartze won $25 with her photograph titled Boxer.

In the adult division, Jayne Williams won $25 in the Trees/Plants/Landscapes category with her photo titled Longhorns in the Sunset.

District staff plans to host the contest early in 2022, but at this time is not sure whether or not the event will be held in person.
