Montgomery suffers medical emergency during Chamois city meeting

CHAMOIS —  Chamois resident Guy Montgomery disputed his water bill at Friday’s Chamois Board of Aldermen meeting. Montgomery argued that the August bill totaled $69.88, which was higher than his typical water bill. Montgomery was disputing $13.28 of the bill.

“The amount is small, but every dollar counts,” Montgomery said.

Mayor Marie Slusser explained that the city was late in doing the reading for the August bills, and everyone’s water bill was higher that month because the reading included additional days.

Alderman Lacey Garett and Alderman Cole Schaben added that their bills were a little higher for the same timeframe.

Slusser suggested tabling the issue until she had time to go through all the paperwork.

“Honestly, I’d like to have an answer tonight,” Montgomery said. “If you remember, I started asking questions in September, and I’ve been to two meetings. It seems like I’ve given ample notice.”

“If the whole town had a price increase that month, I don’t see how we could give a refund to just one person,” Slusser said, repeating that she would like time to go through the paperwork.

Aldermen seemed to agree with Slusser and proposed tabling the issue until the next meeting, but before a motion was made, there was a medical emergency, and the remainder of the meeting was canceled. Mayor Slusser informed the Unterrified Democrat the following day that Montgomery passed away.

• Aldermen approved outstanding bills for the month totaling $22,207.25.

• Chamois had the following account balances: cemetery fund ($10,537.77), general fund ($89,652.85), water ($221,979.66), sewer ($102,112.24), city Community Development Block Grant (CBDG) ($10), city park ($13,625.90), American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) ($69,713.68), sewer bond reserve ($26,817.47), city cemetery ($20,821.32), meter deposits ($12,792.96), water repair ($25,101.95), street ($15,069.78), online bill pay ($21,978.95), and city police ($230).

• The city holds five certificates of deposit totaling $12,238.88.
