Moving forward with the State Fair

Missouri has a proud agricultural history that has helped shape our state into what it is today.

Agriculture is our state’s No. 1 industry, contributing more than $85 billion annually to our state’s economy. It has helped make our state strong, and its people too. Agriculture is a part of our heritage, and that’s why I’m glad to see plans to hold the Missouri State Fair this year are moving forward.

Every year since 1901, Missouri has held a state fair with the exception of one year during World War II. Every year, I believe the state fair gives us an opportunity to come together and to show the best of what Missouri agriculture has to offer. It allows growers and livestock producers to showcase their skills and all the hard work they’ve invested in their projects and exhibitions. The state fair helps tell the ever-evolving story of Missouri agriculture, and I’m glad to see another chapter will be written this year.

Now, the state fair, scheduled for Aug. 13-23, will likely look a little different this year.

While details are still being worked out, it’s already been announced that this year’s line-up of activities will not include concerts. Additionally, the fair plans on stepping up cleaning and sanitation efforts to ensure a safe fair for all.

Hitting a little closer to home, it was recently announced that the Cole County Fair would be happening this year as well, from July 27 through Aug. 1. This gives our community the chance to celebrate farmers and other livestock producers throughout Cole county.

As I said before when the state began opening back up, I hope people use common sense when going out to events like the state and Cole County fairs this year. Social distance when possible and take precautions. Practice good hygiene. And above all, if you’re sick, please stay home.

Our community and our state have been through a lot over the past few months. I’m hoping as the summer progresses, we’ll be able to safely share a few days together that will serve as an opportunity to celebrate the strength and resiliency of Missouri’s agricultural industry.
