Osage County deputies last Wednesday were involved in a pursuit that ended in Cole County with the arrest of Samantha J. Smith, 27, of Holt Summit.

The incident began at approximately noon when deputies responded to a vehicle on private property on Hwy. 63 in Westphalia. Deputies attempted to make contact with Smith at the business when the driver suddenly sped away.

Deputy Andrew Koon attempted to conduct a traffic stop but Smith failed to yield and a pursuit ensued.

Smith traveled north on Hwy. 63 to Hwy. 50 and west to Leslietown Road at a high rate of speed. She failed to negotiate a curve, ran off the roadway and struck a fence, and returned to Riverfront Road.

Sheriff Mike Bonham noted that Smith exited the vehicle, ran and jumped into the Osage River.

Deputy Koon rescued Smith from drowning and she was taken into custody.

Smith has a no-bond warrant out of Cole County she has been charged in Osage County with resisting arrest, and possession of a controlled substance.

Bond has been set at $100,000.
