Osage County Library tech program aims to make patrons more comfortable

Posted

Missouri River Regional Library Information Technician Charles Gudermuth on Tuesday spent time teaching Karen Goodenough of Rich Fountain how to operate Microsoft Excel as part of the Osage County Library’s Tech One-On-One program.
Gudermuth, who has been with MRRL for two years, said he tailors each session with what library patrons want, provided the program is something the library offers.
“A lot of people are afraid they’re going to mess something up on their computer or laptop by clicking on things,” he said. “Our goal is to make everyone comfortable with technology.”
The library has offered one-on-one technology training by appointment since March 2020 but lost time due to COVID and this service is an opportunity for members of the community to sit down for one-on-one training on a variety of topics, including learning how to better navigate the internet, become comfortable with computers, or learn how to use a software program.
Goodenough said that until now, she had asked family and friends for help with various functions on the computer.
“It’s nice to have this option at the library,” she said. “I don’t use a lot of programs but I’d like to know how to use my laptop better.”
Gudermuth provides hands-on interaction using a big-screen monitor so that patrons can clearly see how each process works.
“The role of a library in an ever-changing world is to evolve to meet the unique needs of the communities that rely on its services,” said Marketing and Community Engagement Manager Natalie Newville. “This is not a new concept for Missouri River Regional Library, which serves as far more than just a place to borrow books. As a pivotal resource within the community, Missouri River Regional Library connects community members to resources and nurtures their desire to be lifelong learners.”
This service is available each week on Tuesday mornings from 9 a.m to noon, and reservations are required, with time slots limited to 45-minute sessions.
