LINN — Linn R-2 held a groundbreaking ceremony for their new addition last Friday afternoon.
“I want to take the time to welcome our students,” opened Superintendent Bob James. “This is a big deal for you. As a matter of fact, it’s a bigger deal for you guys than it is anyone else.”
James told the crowd that planning for the field house began in 1968, and initially, a classroom building was supposed to be constructed. “There was never supposed to be students in the basement of the field house,” said James. “We’ve had more than 50 years of Wildcats that have been in that basement since.”
A Linn R-2 graduate, James attended middle school in the basement. “No light, hardly any doors leading out; just living in the basement,” he said. “And, so I’m really glad to say and be a part of the fact that you guys are going to be moving up and out. Those days are coming to an end, and I appreciate the voters of Osage County for supporting us in our movement of you guys out.”
The new addition will connect the Ag and high school buildings. “I hope that you get the opportunity to escape the basement, enjoy a little bit of light, and hopefully, spend some time in our classrooms,” said James, calling them far more conducive to learning.
The school is partnering with owner’s rep Navigate Building Solutions and construction manager BEX Construction Services on the approximately $11,000,000 bond project, which will include classrooms, offices, restrooms, and will connect the existing school to the CTE building.
Public meetings will be held soon to answer questions from the community.
