Pirates fall in Homecoming game to Linn

Chamois saw Friday’s Homecoming game spoiled in a 59-29 loss to Linn as the Pirates shot 25.6% from the floor.

“We had a solid all-around effort from all that stepped on the floor,” said Coach Robbie Bates. “We continue to struggle to score. We are attempting to learn how to prepare ourselves before the ball is in our hands and what has to be done to score. We are also learning the level of focus that it takes to compete at the high school level against quality opponents.”

That scoring difficulty was pronounced in the first quarter as the Pirates put up five points and trailed by 17 going into the second. From there, the second and third quarters were relatively competitive as Chamois trailed 32-13 at the break and 47-23 going into the fourth.

The Pirates hit four three-pointers on the night and went 3-6 at the line.

Caleb Keilholz hit one of those treys and went 2-2 at the stripe on his way to a team-high 15 points. Bill Kirsch hit two three-pointers for his six points, Max McKague (trey) added three, as did Kaden Wuelling, and Landen Northway finished with two. In the assists column, McKague posted four, K. Wuelling had two, and Keilholz added one.

Keilholz and Wuelling shared the rebounding lead with five as McKague snagged four, Evert Mehmert had two, and Northway finished with one.

On the other end, Kirsch and Northway counted a block each, and Wuelling recorded a steal.

Against Jamestown on Tuesday of last week, the Pirates fell 37-26.

“Our defensive effort was extremely solid the entire game,” said Bates, “and rebounding was better throughout the game. Our struggles continue to be on the offensive end of the floor. We are working on understanding how to be a threat on offense without shooting the ball. We are also trying to figure out how to take shots when we are open and in spots where we can make shots.”

McKague drained both Chamois three-pointers and led the team with 12, going 4-6 at the stripe. Keilholz (3-4 FT) added nine, Northway and Wuelling each scored two, and Kirsch posted one.

Keilholz had a team-high four assists, and McKague, Wuelling, and Kirsch each added one.

On the glass, Wuelling led with 10 rebounds, and Keilholz was a close second with nine, as Kirsch and Northway each posted four, Mehmert had three, and McKague counted one.

Wuelling’s three steals paced the team as Keilholz pilfered two, and Kirsch and Northway finished with one apiece.
