Rock Island Trail meeting scheduled

Belle’s portion of the Rock Island Trail runs one mile east to west through the city limits, passing the former MFA building before veering away from Highway 28 as it reaches Alvarado Avenue. If the Maries R-2 School District chooses to participate in a Safe Routes to School program, students could walk through town on the Rock Island Trail to Johnson Avenue and use the new sidewalk to travel to Fourth Street. If students take a left onto Oak Avenue from Fourth Street, they could use the crosswalk to get to Belle Elementary or Belle High schools. City officials may choose to discuss Safe Routes to School and other trail programs during the Jan. 20 meeting at Owensville’s branch of Scenic Regional Library (corner Olive/19 South and East Madison). Missouri State Parks informational meeting will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday to discuss the future development of the former Rock Island corridor into a walking and biking trail. Owensville city officials are hosting an assessment session with area business owners, elected city officials, school district administrators and other interested parties following the library meeting. State Rep. Bruce Sassmann had suggested the assessment meeting as a way for community stakeholders to get together as they collectively help plan for the next stage of trail development in their respective towns. There will be a meeting in Freeburg Jan. 25 at the American Legion Hall starting at 5:30 p.m.
