To the Editor:
As we navigate the impacts of the new administration, it’s important for rural communities like ours to stay informed about policy changes that could affect our way of life. While Washington often focuses on urban issues, the decisions being made will have significant consequences for small towns like ours in Gasconade County.
Education at risk:
One of the administration’s objectives is to dismantle the Department of Education. For a state like Missouri, which is sitting on a massive surplus of funds allocated for public education, this raises critical questions. Despite these funds, our schools remain underfunded, and the leftover money is often reassigned to other programs rather than reaching classrooms. Our children deserve better, and we must ensure that these resources are used as intended, to build a brighter future for our students.
Supporting local farmers and businesses:
Gasconade County is home to a vibrant community of farmers, homesteaders, and small business owners. From our farmers’ markets to local food events, there’s no shortage of opportunities to support local agriculture. When we choose to shop at these businesses instead of big-box stores, we’re investing directly in our neighbors and keeping our economy strong. Shopping local isn’t just responsible, it’s rewarding, fun, and a great way to build lasting connections in our community.
Strengthening community networks:
Our county is blessed with dozens of churches and organizations that do incredible work to support those in need, from providing meals to organizing community outreach programs. These groups already make a huge difference, but there’s always room to grow. Imagine what we could achieve if we all worked together, a unified front to tackle hunger, support struggling families, and care for one another.
Helping others isn’t just a moral duty, it’s deeply fulfilling. Many of us are fortunate to have stable lives, but our community is stronger when we extend a hand to those who are struggling. Whether it’s donating food, volunteering, or simply checking in on a neighbor, every small action adds up.
Being part of this shared effort is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have, and it reminds us why we’re proud to call Gasconade County home.
A call to action:
The road ahead will have challenges, from rising costs to policy shifts that threaten the systems we rely on. But we’re not powerless. We can demand accountability from our leaders, support one another, and make choices that prioritize the well-being of our community.
Let’s shop local, work together, and ensure that Gasconade County remains a place where everyone has the chance to thrive. When we focus on what truly matters, family, neighbors, and shared values, there’s nothing we can’t achieve.
Sincerely,
Arlynn Jones
