Toronto Blue Jay's option Robertson to Triple-A Buffalo

Posted

Following a whirlwind week in which he was called up to the majors from Triple-A Buffalo, including a hit in his debut outing against Philly on Father’s Day, Will Robertson, 27, has been sent back to the minors.

After getting his first big-league call-up on June 11, Robertson went 1-4 with an RBI single in his first outing. Across 12 plate appearances, however, he went 100/.250/.100 before returning to Triple-A. He’ll give up his spot on the 26-man active roster to fellow outfielder Nathan Lukes (concussion), who was activated from the 7-day injured list.

On Tuesday of this week, Robertson spoke about the ups and downs of professional baseball.

“It’s kind of kind of how you have to live it,” he said of the changes. “So, it’s kind of just a process.”

Robertson said he understood that being called up because Lukes was injured may be short-lived. “I think when I got called up for an injury, and it was just a concussion, I kind of figured it was going to be seven days,” he said. “I got into three games, and talking to my dad and some of our family members, it was an opportunity, but I think it was kind of a shorter runway, but I’m grateful for the opportunity.”

Some sports writers have suggested that Robertson may be or might have been part of a trade possibility, but he said no one spoke to him about that. “I don’t really look too much into that,” he said. “We’re back in Buffalo, just trying to keep doing what I’ve been doing all year.”

Robertson’s return to Triple-A Buffalo didn’t connect him with the team right away. “I haven’t actually seen any of them yet because they were on the road,” he noted. “When you get optioned, you get three days to kind of get your stuff figured out. Some guys take it, some guys don’t. They were farther away, and I wouldn’t have gotten in until Saturday night, so I’d have missed that game, and I would have just been able to play one game on Sunday. So, I just elected to take my days and get the family back to Buffalo. I wanted to get them settled in and reset on Monday.”

Robertson has spoken about the change from one level to the next, from his days playing at Fatima to college at Creighton and then the minors leading into his MLB debut.

“The big difference is the pitching,” he said. “Their fastballs are really good, just the metrics and stuff that they’ve got, they’re really good, so you have to be able to take advantage of their mistakes. It’s way more important to make sure you capitalize on mistakes than in Triple-A. I think I missed a couple. In my very first game, I missed a cutter from Zach Wheeler. That was the only pitch that I got to do damage on. And then in my other games, there were one or two pitches in those starts that I missed. I fouled them off, and you have to be able to take advantage of that because those are the only ones you’re going to see. The limited amount of mistakes pitchers make was the biggest difference.”

Robertson added that he experienced a small learning curve during his time in the majors. “I saw the competition for 10 days, and got a taste,” he said. “Now, I’m chasing, and the next time I get up there, I know what to expect. I think it kind of prepares you a little bit more to I think that’s going to happen at every level. I think at Triple-A last year, the way that they attacked you was a little different than Double-A. Once you start getting a little used to it, or a little more comfortable, then everything slows down a little bit. I think that’s the same with any level that you’re playing at for the first time.”
