What will be the 101st assembly’s legacy?

With just three weeks remaining in our legislative session, I wonder what this bicentennial general assembly will be remembered for?

This week, the Missouri House of Representatives voted to expel a member for an ethics violation. The Missouri House has only expelled one other member in the state’s 200 year history. John Samp- son was expelled in 1865 for disloyalty to the Union.

Two key bills might be defining issues for the remainder of the legislative session. House Bill 85, the Second Amendment

Preservation Act, may come to the floor of the Senate for a vote in the coming weeks. Many Missourians are rightfully concerned about Federal overreach and want a guarantee that their Second Amendment Rights will remain secure.

In the House, I expect that Senate Bill 262 will come to the floor for a vote.

SB 262 would increase funding for Missouri’s roads by raising the gas tax for the first time since 1996. Both pieces of legislation may have a significant im- pact on the legacy of the 101st General Assembly.

On Monday morning I participated in a Bicentennial tree planting on the Capitol grounds. Two Legacy Oaks were cultivated from the University of Missouri Botanical Garden and planted in the south lawn. They are sure to enhance the landscape for Missouri’s Bicentennial Celebration this summer and generations to come. The 200th anniversary of Missouri’s statehood is Aug. 10, 2021.

Thursday afternoon, I attended Governor Parson’s bill signing ceremony for HB 429 and HB 430. Both bills support Missouri adoptive families and children in foster care. Every child deserves a family to provide love, support, and a strong foundation. Missourians who take on this role as foster and adoptive parents are invaluable to the children of our state, and I am extremely proud to have supported both pieces of legislation.
