Wildcats win over Chamois highlighted by senior play

Linn hosted the Chamois Pirates Friday for senior night, and it turned out to be a good experience for the Wildcats, who won 65-42.

“I thought all night offensively we were in a good place,” said Coach Clay Crouch. “In the first half we were not, defensively, but we came out to start the second half and our effort level on defense was much better.”

After the first quarter the Pirates held a 14-11 lead, and maintained the advantage through the second quarter, taking a 26-24 lead into the locker room.

“We responded the correct way, like good teams should,” said Crouch.

The Wildcats jumped to a 44-32 lead by the end of the third, and the fourth quarter was much like the third, as Linn widened the deficit.

It was also a special night as seniors were recognized.

“We have a great group of seniors and I am so thankful to get to coach them,” said Crouch. “So thank you Parker, Drew, Chris, Alex, and Drew. You guys have been amazing for our program and I can’t wait to go battle for a district title with you guys in a couple weeks. I normally try to keep things team-oriented but getting to be there and see Chris Kmiec hit a three on senior night was one of the coolest things I have ever experienced. Moments like that is what coaching and teaching is all about. The way this team and community roots for that kid is amazing so I am glad Chris got to do that. Words can’t really express what tonight meant but I am just thankful to be a part of such a great group of young men and community.”

Overall, Linn covered 48% from the floor, including a 4-18 mark from threepoint range, and went 13-15 from the stripe.

D. Voss led the offense with 16 points, as Maassen added 15, including a perfect 7-7 night at the stripe, while J. Voss put in 10. Alek Peters drained two three-pointers and finished with eight points as Andy Hueste hit a trey on his way to seen, with four by Austin McKim and two from Alex Grellner.

In the assists column, Peters led with five, followed by D. Voss and J. Voss, each with three, and Patterson, who dished it twice.

D. Voss and Maassen shared the rebounding lead with seven apiece, as Peters collected six, and Patterson, McKim and J. Voss each grabbed three.

Maassen’s three blocks led the defense, with another by D. Voss, while Grellner posted two steals.

In a two-quarter JV game, Linn claimed a 26-23 win. No individual stats were made available.

On Thursday, Linn had a solid third quarter but the rest of the game was controlled by St. Elizabeth as the Wildcats lost 66-42.

“I thought coming out we played well to start the game,” said Crouch. “We were attacking and had a lot of energy.”

However, by halftime, Linn faced a 33-15 deficit. Linn found a groove in the third, winning the frame 21-16, but it was not enough.

“Unfortunately, we battled some adversity and that was tough to overcome,” said Crouch. “Give them credit too; they shot the ball really well and when they do that they are tough to beat. I thought after halftime and we came out and fought. It just wasn’t enough in the end. I am proud of our kids.”

Peters and Patterson shared the offensive lead with 12 points apiece, as each hit four three-pointers to account for their scoring. J. Voss added seven points, while Maassen posted six and D. Voss had five. J. Voss paced the squad with four assists as Peters and Maassen each had two.

In the rebounding arena, Maassen grabbed five, D. Voss added four, Peters posted three, and McKim and J. Voss each finished with two.

Maassen led with three blocks, and had a pair of steals, while J. Voss added two steals.

Linn fell in the JV game 33-30. No individual stats were made available.
