LINN — State Tech Automotive Instructor Mitch Branson has been named a recipient of the 2026 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Education, recognizing his outstanding commitment to student success, innovation in the classroom, and service to the community.
“Mitch’s unwavering commitment to excellence, student achievement, and service make him truly deserving of this honor,” said Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Affairs Angie Gaines.
For the past 14 years, Branson has played a key role in the continued success of State Tech’s Automotive program. His deep industry knowledge, high standards, and dedication to student learning have made a lasting impact both in the classroom and in the lab.
“Mitch is a tremendous asset to State Tech and a deserving recipient of the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching,” said Dean Jeremy Goss. “He does an excellent job helping students develop the technical abilities and work ethic needed for success in the automotive field.”
Branson brings a wealth of real-world experience to his role, having earned an Associate of Applied Science in Automotive Technology and spending nearly a decade in the transportation industry before joining State Tech. He later graduated with honors from University of Central Missouri with a degree in Occupational Education, further strengthening his foundation as an educator.
“I am very humbled and proud to be recognized by the faculty at State Tech for this award,” said Branson. “It takes all of us to get students across the finish line sometimes, and this shows that an instructor’s efforts are making a difference to our students and other faculty at State Tech. I have always looked up to the former recipients of this award as role models, and tried to carry the same passion for instruction and success as they have.”
At State Tech, Branson is known for delivering a hands-on education experience that prepares students for high-paying, high-demand careers.
His innovative teaching methods, including Ford Maintenance and Light Repair (MLR) certification integration, combined with his ASE certifications (A-4 through A-7), ensure students gain the technical skills employers demand.
Beyond the classroom, Branson is recognized for going above and beyond serving as a mentor to new instructors, contributing as a Faculty Senate member, and previously earning recognition as a State Tech Champion. His advising approach is thoughtful and impactful, helping guide students toward meaningful career paths, administrators noted.
Outside State Tech, Branson is an active member of the Linn Lions Club, and serves as the organizer of the annual mud run at the Osage County Fair.
As the top-ranked two-year college in the country, State Tech continues to lead the way in hands-on education, preparing students for careers that begin the moment they graduate.
