Fatima presents 80s culture in spring play “Mall Madness”

WESTPHALIA — Fatima’s Drama Club embraced neon colors, big personalities, and plenty of 1980s nostalgia during its spring production of “Mall Madness” by Todd Wallinger.

Set in a bustling mall food court during the height of 1980s mall culture, the comedy followed three distinct social groups — nerds devoted to Dungeons & Dragons, glamorous popular girls, and members of the football team — as they navigated friendships, rivalries, schemes, and heartbreak while chasing tickets to the fictional “Lipsticks” concert.

The production also featured a colorful supporting cast of mall walkers, food court workers, and retail employees, helping recreate the energy and atmosphere of a classic shopping mall from the era.

Drama Club Sponsor Levi Maxwell said students played a major role in selecting the production. “I give the seniors in drama club the opportunity to find plays they would like to do,” Maxwell said. “They give me a list of 10-12 plays. We then narrow that down to five or six. Once it is narrowed down, the entire drama club votes on which play they want to do. It is a very democratic process.”

Maxwell said the process helps students take ownership of the production from the beginning. “The bonus is that it allows the kids to have a say and thus be more invested,” said Maxwell, who co-directed the production alongside Jeanette Schroeder.

Featured cast members included Draven Cole as Elwood, Eden LePage as Fletcher, Kendra Kirsch as Stevie, Kaylee Juergensmeyer as Chanel, Grace Dudenhoeffer as Amber One, Izzy Hoffman as Amber Two, Jenna Kirsch as Amber Three, Journey Markway as Brock, Ben Stephens as Garth, and Jackson Reasons as Kenny.

Additional cast members included Eli Bock as Evan, Tucker Gregory as Blake, Annaline Schroeder as Blanche, Rose Backes as Darla, Polly LePage as Mr. Henry and Wayne, and Lyssa Bax as Jessie.

Senior Drama Club members recognized during the production included Eden LePage, Kendra Kirsch, Kaylee Juergensmeyer, Jenna Kirsch, Polly LePage, Bridget Clark, Caterina Sesti, Isabella Smith, Chris Kirsch, and Jesse Schroeder.

Backstage crew members included Bridget Clark, Caterina Sesti, Isabella Smith, Chris Kirsch, Jesse Schroeder, Celia Crawford, Collin Walters, Faith Dudenhoeffer, LeeAngie Soto, and Annaline Schroeder.

Seniors were recognized during a ceremony after the final performance.
