Lady Cats VB ends year second in districts

Linn (21-8-3) ended its volleyball campaign on Monday in the Class 2, District 6 tournament after a loss to top seed Hermann, 25-14, 25-23, 25-23, on the Lady Bearcats’ floor.

“We knew going into this match that it would be tough,” said Coach Megan Russell. “Hermann has had a Final 4 team for the last eight years straight. Last year, seeing them in the postseason, our nerves got the best of us, and we did not perform well. We were ready for a redo this year and wanted to show them what we were made of.”

Russell and Asst. Coach Daniel Pauk prepared the team as best they could as the Lady Cats do not get a chance to see Hermann in the regular season. “Stat-wise, we were pretty evenly matched,” said Russell. “We were able to tweak a few of our rotations to match up better with them. We honestly came out pretty flat in the first set, but turned things around and it was way more evenly matched. I couldn’t be more proud of this team. The girls fought hard all season. Although we came up short on the scoreboard, our effort, heart, and growth this season are something to be very proud of. Again, we are a very young team with no seniors so it is exciting to see all of this talent coming back next year. The future looks bright for our Wildcats volleyball program.”

Stats were not available at press time.

On Thursday, the second seed Lady Cats defeated North Callaway, 25-14, 25-20, 25-27, 25-16, in the semifinals after a first-round bye.

“We showed up ready to play and honestly, this was probably one of our best volleyball matches to date,” said Russell. “The entire team stayed disciplined and executed our game plan. North Callaway ended up taking a set from us, but we maintained our composure and didn’t let it get to us. Everyone contributed and did a great job connecting and supporting each other.”
