HERMANN — For the first time in school history, Linn’s volleyball program has a district championship, and the Lady Wildcats earned it Monday night in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Hermann High School.
After dropping the opening set against Osage County rival Fatima, Linn rallied for a 21-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-15 victory to claim the Class 2 District 6 championship. The final point set off a celebration among players, coaches, and the large contingent of Linn supporters who traveled to Hermann.
“This is a special group of girls, and I couldn’t be more proud of what they have accomplished,” coach Megan Russell said. “Winning a district championship for the first time in school history is an incredible achievement, and to do it against our school rival makes it even more meaningful.”
Fatima made its own intentions clear in the opening set, building an 18-12 advantage before Linn fought back. The Lady Wildcats trimmed the deficit to 21-19, but the Lady Comets protected their lead and finished with a 25-21 victory.
The setback did little to slow Linn, which seized control early in the second set. The Lady Wildcats built an 8-2 advantage, stretched the margin to 11-5, and maintained control as Fatima attempted to close the gap. Leading 20-16 late, Linn turned to Lexy Strong at the service line, and she helped finish a five-point run for the 25-16 victory.
With the match even, Linn continued its aggressive play in the third set. Fatima briefly held a 3-2 advantage, but the Lady Wildcats responded by moving ahead 7-3 and extending the lead to 12-7. Their momentum continued with a 17-9 advantage, and Linn closed out the set 25-17 to move within one victory of the championship.
“After dropping the first set, the girls responded with tremendous composure, determination, and confidence,” Russell said. “They trusted each other, stayed aggressive, and continued to execute our game plan.”
There would be no fifth set. Linn maintained its offensive pressure in the fourth, opening a 14-9 lead and widening the margin to 19-10. Although Fatima continued fighting, the Lady Wildcats refused to surrender control. Nicole Grellner delivered an ace to put Linn on the verge of victory at 24-14, and the Lady Wildcats finished the set 25-15 to secure their place in school history.
The Linn stat sheet credited Kylie Goans with a team-high 11 kills, followed by Ali Russell with eight and Grellner with four. Nevaeh Ames and Carley Brandt added three apiece, while Kendra Robinson and Jorja Kempker each contributed one. Brandt was credited with four solo blocks, and Ames recorded two.
For Fatima, the defeat ended a season in which the Lady Comets battled through adversity and continued developing under coach Ellie Crede.
“Although the outcome wasn’t what we hoped for, I am incredibly proud of this team and the growth they showed throughout the season,” Crede said. “This group has worked hard, continued to battle through adversity, and represented Fatima with pride.”
Crede said the experience gained throughout the season will benefit her players moving forward, even as the disappointment of the championship loss remains.
For Linn, the victory was the culmination of months of preparation, improvement, and determination. Russell credited the players’ commitment to each other and their belief that they could accomplish something no previous Lady Wildcat volleyball team had achieved.
“This championship is a reflection of their commitment, resilience, and the bond they have built as a team,” Russell said.
The celebration extended well beyond the court, with Linn supporters filling the gymnasium with cheers as the Lady Wildcats received their championship trophy.
“The fan support tonight was epic and we couldn’t have done it without them,” Russell said.
Linn’s historic postseason run continues Thursday when the Lady Wildcats host Brentwood in a sectional match at 6:30 p.m.
