Let’s be politically correct

Dear Editor,

The 250th Anniversary hoopla is as phony as the Russians claiming they invented the telephone.

Neither the United States Army, Marine Corps or Navy were established in 1775. In 1775 there was no United States. We were colonies of the British Empire.

In 1776, we declared our independence but did not become states until after Cornwallis surrendered to Washington at Yorktown,Virginia on Oct. 19, 1781. Even then England did not proclaim the end of hostilities until Feb. 4, 1783. Until then we were colonies belonging to the British Empire.

The U.S. is planning a big hoopla in 2026 to celebrate it’s 250th anniversary. Again,  wrong. We were 13 colonies in 1776 who declared their independence. Also the 4th of July has always been celebrated as Independence Day. On July 4, 1776 we were five years from being independent from Britain. Had the colonies lost the war and Washington surrendered to Cornwallis, the American Civil War may never have happened.

Spain was the first country to recognize American independence on Feb. 3, 1783.

The United States Constitution was not approved until Sept. 17, 1787 and Washington became the first United States president on May 7, 1789.

America demands to be politically correct, so let’s be politically correct.

Respectfully,

Dieter F. Palmer, USN (Ret)
