Linn golfers continue growth through packed week of competition

Linn’s golf team closed a demanding stretch of matches with continued progress across the lineup, including a home match on Thursday after competing in the Central State 8 Conference tournament, and the New Bloomfield Invitational over a busy span of days. The compressed schedule tested endurance, but also highlighted steady improvement and key milestones for multiple players.

“Overall, it was a week full of growth, first-time achievements, and standout performances,” said Coach John Viehland. “With so many rounds in a short time, our players showed resilience, growth, and some unforgettable moments on the course. This group continues to improve with every round, and the experience they’re gaining now will pay off as the season moves forward.”

The Wildcats wrapped up the stretch at their home match with a third-place finish, building on experience gained throughout the week as players continue to settle into a competitive rhythm.

Colton Leivian led with a 55, as Jason Greer added a 56, Jake Bish turned in a 59, Cameron Hoelscher shot a 60, and Ryatt Reynolds carded a 63.

At the Central State 8 Conference tournament, held at LA Nickell Golf Course, Linn posted a seventh-place team score in a competitive field. Individual scores included Leivian’s team-best 93, followed by Bish and Reynolds, each with a 109, Hoelscher with 121, and Greer with a 123. “Our finish reflects both the level of competition and the continued development of a relatively young lineup,” said Viehland.

That event also produced one of the week’s defining moments, as Hoelscher recorded his first career birdie. “That’s an accomplishment every golfer remembers,” said Viehland.

Linn’s week began at the New Bloomfield Invitational, where the Wildcats finished 12th overall as a team and saw several opportunities for growth.

Leivian led the team with a 98, followed by Reynolds (104), Hertzing (116), Bish (120), and Mitchell (142).

Mitchell delivered one of the most meaningful moments of the week, completing her first full 18-hole round. “It was a big milestone, and her excitement and determination made it a special moment for the entire team,” said Viehland.

Another highlight of the week was Hertzing’s chip shot that struck the pin and led to a strong par save, showcasing touch and feel around the green that continues to develop.

Leivian continues to pace the Wildcats as the team’s top performer, consistently competing against the area’s best golfers. “Colton continues to lead by example, stepping up at every match,” Viehland said. “Jake, our lone senior with experience, is making big strides and providing leadership as the season progresses.”

Linn golfers played at Sullivan last week, but match results were unavailable.
