Linn progresses despite loss to Belle

Linn battled hard last Tuesday night against a strong Belle squad, ultimately falling 66–46 in a game that showed both grit and growth for the Wildcats.

“While the shots didn’t fall the way we hoped, the heart, energy, and effort were undeniable from start to finish,” said Coach John Viehland. “Belle boasts an impressive group of players in Hank Willis, Hank Stratman, and Garrett Gehlert, and they played like it — but Linn didn’t back down. Defensively, our Wildcats took a noticeable step forward. The rotations were sharper, communication improved, and the toughness we’ve been preaching is starting to show up consistently on the floor.”

Linn shot 35.5% overall, and covered 13-22 from the stripe (59.1%), while winning the second-chance points battle 11-4.

Offensively, Tony Peters stepped up in a big way, giving Linn a much-needed spark and leading the charge with confident scoring and aggressive play. He went 4-6 at the line and led with 12 points.

“Even without Craig Laughlin in the middle — a key presence whose scoring and interior impact we certainly miss — other players are beginning to believe in their roles and rising to the challenge,” said Viehland.

Nash Tyree hit a pair of treys and went 2-2 at the line for 10 points, as Gus Peters (4-7 FT) added eight, Dawson Sprenger (trey) put in five, Cody Heckman posted four, Aaron Starke scored three, Peyton Peters scored two, and Colton Leivian finished with one. In the assists column, G. Peters had three, and Kahne Brandt, Starke, Leivian, and Preston Keilholz posted one each.

Ball movement continues to improve game by game. “We’re generating the right looks and making the right reads; now it’s just a matter of knocking shots down,” said Coach Viehland. “The progress is already evident: 29 points in the first game, 46 in this one. The offense is coming along, and the guys are starting to trust the system and each other.”

G. Peters and T. Peters led the rebounding effort with six apiece, followed by Sprenger (3), Starke, Leivian, and Heckman (2 apiece), and P. Peters (1).

Defensively, Linn was led by Brandt’s two steals, as T. Peters added a steal and a block, and Tyree, G. Peters, and Heckman added a steal apiece.

“Though the scoreboard didn’t fall our way, this was a game full of positives —effort, resilience, improvement — and signs of what this team can become,” said Viehland. “With continued work and belief, this group is trending in the right direction and growing stronger every time they step on the floor.”

In the JV game, Linn fought from start to finish, playing tough, disciplined basketball and showing what true team play looks like.

“The boys shared the ball, trusted each other, and executed on both ends of the floor — leading to a well-earned victory,” said Viehland. “It was a complete team effort, with every player contributing in their role and bringing energy to the court. The group’s communication, ball movement, and hustle set the tone all night and proved to be the difference.”

The win also marks Coach Cam Carter’s first victory as part of the Wildcat family. “This was a great moment for both him and the team,” said Coach Viehland. “The boys earned it with heart, teamwork, and a commitment to playing the right way. This is a strong step forward for our JV squad, and a sign of more good things to come.”

Kaden Monroe led the team with 14 points.
