OSAGE COUNTY — The Osage County Health Department provides a wide range of services that support residents at many points in daily life, offering local access to preventive care, family support, public health protection, and safety checks that might otherwise require travel or coordination with multiple agencies.

Most of their services are available at low or no cost, regardless of whether someone has medical insurance.

Based in Linn, the Osage County Health Department serves as a centralized public health resource for the county. While hospitals, clinics, and emergency services address emergencies or serious injury, the health department focuses on prevention, routine care, education, and follow-up services that help maintain individual and community health over time. Most of the department’s services are low to no cost, available to the general public, and are not limited to those who reside in Osage County.

One of the department’s most commonly used functions is assistance with vital records. Staff help residents obtain birth and death certificates, providing local support for documentation required for legal, medical, insurance, and financial purposes following a birth or death.

Clinical and nursing services form another significant part of the department’s work. These services include routine immunizations, tuberculosis skin testing, medication injections, blood draws, blood pressure checks, foot and nail care, dressing changes, and general nurse visits. Drug testing and lice checks are also provided as needed, allowing residents to access basic health services close to home.

Public health nursing extends beyond the clinic setting into schools and the broader community. The department conducts school health screenings throughout the year and provides oral health reviews and fluoride varnish applications for children and pregnant women. Additional health screenings help identify concerns early and connect individuals with appropriate care or referrals.

Maternal, infant, and family health services are a major focus of the department’s outreach efforts. Through administration of the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program, eligible families receive nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and supplemental food assistance. The department also offers free prenatal classes and lactation visits and provides diapers, wipes, and other supportive items to families as part of broader public health initiatives.

Child safety and injury prevention are addressed through car seat education, inspections, and distribution, helping ensure children are properly restrained during travel. CPR certification courses are also offered to schools, daycares, and first responders, providing skills that can be critical in emergency situations.

Environmental and regulatory responsibilities represent another key area of service. The health department conducts environmental public health inspections, oversees food safety and sanitation standards, inspects daycare facilities, and provides training hours and health promotion activities for childcare providers. Water testing kits are distributed to support safe drinking water practices in homes across the county.

The department also plays an ongoing role in disease monitoring and response. Staff investigate communicable disease cases, track influenza activity, respond to animal bite incidents, and monitor lead exposure cases. Lead testing and follow-up are conducted when indicated, helping reduce long-term health risks, particularly for children.

Community outreach and education remain part of the department’s mission. Health promotion activities are offered throughout the year, and some services are provided through drive-thru clinics or events designed to improve accessibility for residents who may face transportation or scheduling barriers.

Certain services, such as mental health care may involve referrals or partnerships depending on individual circumstances but the department often serves as a starting point for connecting residents with appropriate resources.

Taken together, these services illustrate the health department’s role as a practical, day-to-day resource for the community. By providing preventive care, family support, inspections, education, and disease surveillance locally, the Osage County Health Department helps residents meet a wide range of low to no cost health-related needs without leaving the county.

The Osage County Health Department is located at 1218 East Main Street in Linn. Information about services and appointment availability can be obtained by calling (573) 897-3103.
