Osage County R-1 hosts ‘Saddle up’ family math night

CHAMOIS — Families traded pencils for play last Friday evening as Osage County R-1 Elementary went all out for its western-themed “Saddle up for family math night.”

Each classroom became its own stop along a math trail, with teachers (and at least one spouse) guiding hands-on activities designed to get students and their families working together. At one station, children arranged tangram-style geometric pieces into animals and designs, while another challenged students to build horse and cow corrals. In other classrooms, students tested their aim with a horseshoe toss, roped “cows” with math questions beneath, and assembled a snack mix by following a recipe and measuring portions.

The western theme carried throughout the building, from cowboy hats and boots to paper cacti, a barnyard display, and a chuckwagon-style snack stop offering hotdogs, chips, and soda before families headed into the classrooms.

The event emphasized making math approachable and engaging, giving families a chance to experience how problem-solving and number sense can be practiced through play. Students moved from room to room, collaborating, experimenting, and celebrating small victories along the way.

Math night was organized through the school’s Title I program and encouraged families to take an active role in their child’s learning in a relaxed, interactive setting.
