WESTPHALIA — Fatima senior Sydney Scheppers has been named the Osage County Anti-Drug Community Action Team (OC-ADCAT) Student of the Month. A big reason for her selection is her commitment to modeling a drug-free life and consistently serving as a positive role model for her peers.
“Living a drug and alcohol-free lifestyle is important to me because avoiding substances helps protect my brain and body, leading to better overall health and stronger academic performance,” said Scheppers. “Staying substance- free also reduces the risk of addiction and allows me to remain focused on my goals and future.”
Scheppers said her decision to remain clean came from the role her parents played in instilling these values.
“I decided to stay drug and alcohol-free from a very young age,” she said. “I have also seen the negative consequences that drug and alcohol use can have on people’s lives due to poor decision-making. I would rather stay safe and be able to help others, such as ensuring people get home safely, than risk being involved in an accident or a harmful situation.”
Her choices make her an excellent choice for recognition. Scheppers sets herself apart by being intentional about her social circle and the influences she allows in her life.
“I nominated Sydney because she models a drug-free life and consistently serves as a positive role model for her peers,” said Guidance Counselor Robin Schulte. “She sets high standards for herself and surrounds herself with positive role models, which inspires her to be that for others.”
Schulte added that Scheppers is a conscientious and kind student who considers the needs of everyone in the room.
“She regularly considers others, seeks the best outcome for everyone, and shows respect toward teachers and staff at Fatima,” said Schulte. “Her strong work ethic and positive character traits set an example that other students admire.”
Scheppers leads by example. Her respectful behavior and consistent effort distinguish her in class and in school activities. “Her willingness to support classmates makes her an outstanding candidate for this honor,” said Schulte.
Scheppers sets herself apart by carefully curating the company she keeps. “Sydney surrounds herself with people who play an influential role or impact in her life,” said Schulte.
Scheppers maintains this lifestyle without feeling the weight of peer pressure that many high-schoolers face.
“I have no desire to attend parties, and I do not experience pressure to do so,” she said. “If I am at a family event and offered a drink, I choose to avoid it altogether.”
Her support system is crucial to her success. Her friends share her values, and her family — parents Brian and Dana, and sister Emma — is supportive of her desire to stay safe.
“My circle of friends plays a major role in helping me maintain a drug and alcohol-free lifestyle because they do not go out partying or drinking, so I do not feel pressured to do so,” Scheppers said. “My family is also very supportive of my decision and would much rather me stay safe and healthy.”
Scheppers is involved in a wide array of extracurricular activities, serving as the Senior Class Representative in Student Council, Treasurer for the National Honor Society, and Reporter for the FFA. She is also a member of FCCLA, FBLA, SADD, PEP Club, FCA, Book Club, RAK, and Skills USA. Additionally, she competes in softball and track.
With a clear focus on her future, Scheppers plans to pursue a nursing degree.
“I plan to attend Columbia College and maintain a high GPA while gaining hands-on experience through the nursing program,” Scheppers said. “To achieve these goals, I am working hard in my classes, staying on top of my schoolwork, and prioritizing my education above other activities.”
OC-ADCAT Executive Director Lorie Winslow will present Scheppers with a certificate, and she will be eligible to apply for the annual Student of the Month Scholarship.
“I am so excited to showcase our seniors who have chosen to live a drug- and alcohol-free life,” said OC-ADCAT Education Committee Chairperson Charlotte Bellsmith. “I know this isn’t an easy thing to do. The pressure on our teens to drink while still underage is still pretty severe.”
