META — Fourteen teams and more than 110 players took part in the 16th annual Nolan Schroeder Memorial Tournament at Meta City Park, with Good Times claiming the championship.
The double-elimination volleyball tournament was held Friday and Saturday in memory of Nolan Ryan Schroeder of Meta, who died from melanoma in June 2009. The event was established by Schroeder’s family and friends to honor his memory, raise awareness of melanoma, and support cancer research and local cancer programs.
Good Times finished first, followed by Auggie’s Doggies in second place and Beer Pressure in third.
The tournament also provided an opportunity for those attending to receive free skin cancer screenings.
Amanda Peters, FNP-C, of Jefferson City Medical Group conducted screenings for 56 people Saturday morning. Peters represents Miles Against Melanoma, a Jefferson City nonprofit organization.
Rodney and Dunja Wieberg provided a camping trailer, allowing the screenings to be conducted in a private, air-conditioned area.
Maries-Osage Ambulance District provided standby ambulance units and personnel during the tournament because of the heat and sun.
Meta Fire & Rescue and Auxiliary operated food and drink concessions throughout the event, including a pork steak dinner Friday night. Sunscreen and samples donated to the tournament were also distributed to players.
Proceeds from this year’s tournament will benefit cancer research and local cancer support efforts in Nolan R. Schroeder’s name.
The Schroeder family thanked the players, spectators, volunteers, and businesses whose donations and support helped make the tournament possible.
