The real horrors of a concentration camp

Posted

Dear Editor:

To Jenny Smith who had an article of questions on Feb. 17, which I took the time to research and answered every question posed. I sent my article in not once, not twice, but three times! The News Tribune editor does not want people to learn the truth, he prefers they go around calling Trump “Nazi”! But have “any” of them seen the concentration camp in Dachau, Germany, read the articles in the book, Our Century or gone to the Holocaust Museum in DC or Arlington Cemetery? Jenny my phone # is 573-635-2662 and I will mail you the answers!

Soldiers are people who pay for your freedoms. They don’t always know where their next assignment will be or if their lives will be endangered. Military service use to be mandatory and people were more aware of what their freedoms cost! My husband and three of my classmates had assignments in Germany for three years. The recreation center where I worked organized a tour of the concentration camp at Dachau---we filled four buses!

We saw the showers that put out poison gas, instead of water. Saw pictures of emaciated bodies and those killed in the barb wire trying to escape. The Holocaust Museum has a room full of shoes and women’s hair was shaved to stuff mattresses. You receive a name when you enter and won’t find out if that person survived until the very end.

Arlington Cemetery is quite the sight when you see that Wreaths Across America decorates those soldiers’ graves with wreaths before Christmas. My husband and I started 13 Wreaths for Heroes events to honor local military personnel. The price of freedom is costly, as we and my three classmates were exposed to toxic chemicals in the military housing in Germany. My classmates each lost a son, my husband and I lost two sons. We were puzzled as we never used drugs, never consumed a drop of alcohol while trying to conceive, never smoked a cigarette, took naps and took the medicine the doctor gave me that was to make the child stronger. So, we were quite surprised when the delivery doctor came in and said, “Mrs. Schnieders I don’t think your son is going to live, but if he does, he will never walk!” I spent 10 hour days in ICU’s for two whole years and lost both sons, from which you never recover. Freedom is not “free”! I feel we should go back to mandatory service, so we don’t have idiots calling our president “Nazi”!
