After reading the Letter to the Editor in the newspaper’s May 6th Mail Bag titled “Defence of Peter Scheizer”, it occurred to me that both its author and I base our views of the world differently. I have been considering this a lot lately and have reached the conclusion that all of us perceive issues and events through a lens based on our life experiences: how we were raised, experiences and opportunities that were afforded us, where we get our information, and influences from individuals that have crossed our paths and served as role models. As the old saying goes “variety is the spice of life” and, like the food that we eat, a variety of views and experiences can go a long way in understanding the world around us. It can also add to the understanding that one has when forming one’s opinions and navigating life.
Therefore, I propose an experiment in civil discourse. I will be at Ruhe Coffee in Linn on Thursday, May 14 at 10;00 am and would like to welcome Ms. Schnieders and anyone else to meet and discuss issues and how we form our opinions of them. I will have a copy of the
Unterrified Democrat on the table so that I can be easily recognized.
