Linn High School track and field advanced 10 athletes in five events from Saturday’s MSHSAA Class 2 District 4 meet at New Bloomfield.
“As coaches, we told our athletes that if they gave it everything they had and competed at their top level, we couldn’t be upset and were incredibly proud of all of them,” said Coach Robyn Baker, as the Wildcats also ended the day with several personal bests.
Kahne Brandt, Cody Heckman, Paulie Lopez, and Tommy Scheulen ran a time of 1:34.20 to break the school record in the 4x200 relay for second place and a trip to sectionals.
“It was exciting to see that group have success after a rough start to the season,” said Baker.
K. Brandt, Heckman, Aaden Nelson, and Scheulen also advanced in the 4x100 relay after a third-place performance in 44.94.
Baker said the group has worked hard to control handoffs and maintain speed through the entire race.
“It will be fun to watch them at the next level,” she added.
Isaiah Franken placed fifth in pole vault with a personal-best 3.75m, while Connor Knoll placed ninth in shot put with a throw of 10.79m. Reid Baker ended his track and field career with a personal-best 47.16 in the 300m hurdles.
On the girls’ side, Adalyn Brandt, Genna Haslag, Ruby Herndon, and Elyse Brandt got the Lady Wildcats started by placing second in the 4x800 relay with a time of 12:14.42.
Herndon started the relay strong, and the Lady Wildcats maintained a strong pace. Linn had to change the relay team before the conference meet because of an injury, and E. Brandt proved to be a nice addition.
Herndon built on that relay performance and pushed herself to a fourth-place finish (2:46.86) in the open 800m run, earning a second opportunity to compete at the sectional level.
Madison Wood also advanced for Linn by placing fourth in shot put with a throw of 9.51m.
“Madison has worked hard in the throwing events, and it was great to see her excitement and determination to compete well at the next level,” said Baker.
Tiauna Friend competed in her final meet and ran a personal-best 31.39 in the 200m dash. Baker said the program wishes her the best as she moves on to compete in collegiate archery next year.
