Two charged after traffic stop leads to cocaine, firearms seizure

OSAGE COUNTY — Two men were charged July 19 in Osage County after a traffic stop near Linn allegedly led deputies to discover cocaine and two loaded handguns in a vehicle said to be recently purchased.

Christopher Jason Tyler Bond, of Fulton, and Devon Bennie Jackson, of Holt Summit, were each charged with one count of possession of a controlled substance, a Class D felony, and one count of unlawful use of a weapon by possessing a firearm while also possessing a controlled substance, a Class E felony.

According to probable cause statements filed by Deputy Manion, he stopped both an unregistered Chevrolet and an unregistered 2012 Jaguar at approximately 4:16 p.m. on July 18 while they were traveling west on U.S. Highway 50 near Wolf Ridge Trail. Jackson was identified as the driver of the jaguar, and Bond was the passenger. Bond told the deputy he had just purchased the vehicle at Thriftway in Linn from a confidential seller and that Jackson had driven because Bond did not have a driver’s license.

Jackson informed Manion there were firearms in the vehicle. The deputy reported finding a loaded Glock 19 9mm handgun and a loaded Taurus G3 9mm handgun on the driver’s side floorboard. The Taurus was positioned toward the passenger seat.

After Jackson consented to a search of the vehicle, Manion reported finding a blue-and-black sock in the center console. The sock, which appeared to be sized for a toddler, contained a blue sandwich bag holding a white powdery substance he suspected to be cocaine. He also located an Air Jordan bag on the passenger-side floorboard containing an additional magazine for the Taurus handgun and $1,581.40 in cash and change, which Bond identified as his. Bond told investigators the magazine was in his bag because Jackson had asked him to hold it.

The probable cause statements say a Nartec field test administered by Cpl. Bell indicated the substance tested positive for cocaine.

After advising both men of their Miranda rights, deputies questioned them separately. According to the statements, both Bond and Jackson denied knowing about the cocaine, with each saying they had just left Thriftway after the vehicle purchase. Jackson acknowledged both firearms were his and said he had given the magazine to Bond to hold.

Manion wrote that because the cocaine was located in the center console between the two occupants, both men were in constructive possession of the narcotic. He also noted that Bond could have accessed the firearms from the passenger seat and that it was unusual for Jackson to be carrying two handguns.

Judge Sonya Brandt set bond at $25,000 cash or surety for each defendant. Court records show both Bond and Jackson posted $25,000 surety bonds following their July 19 arrests. Their initial court appearance was scheduled for Aug. 4 in Osage County Circuit Court.
