Fatima runners earn medals at Smith-Cotton Invitational

Fatima turned in several strong performances Saturday at the Smith-Cotton Invitational, with the Comets collecting medals at both the high school and junior high levels despite competing short-handed.

Brie Massman led the high school girls with a runner-up finish in 20:49, while Melissa Verslues placed fifth in 21:53, and Karly Bock was 20th in 24:14.

“We were extremely short-handed on Saturday as several scheduling conflicts and a few athletes were held back for rest, but our competing runners did an amazing job,” said Fatima coach Marc Bridges. “Brie and Michael were both able to secure the runner-up positions. Brie and Michael are both showing a lot of poise and determination in their races so far this season.”

Verslues recorded her fastest time of the season despite what Bridges described as the slowest course the Comets have run so far. Bock also posted a season-best time and earned her first cross country medal.

Michael Gabelsberger paced the high school boys’ squad with a second-place time of 17:16, followed by Austin Woehr (23, 19:18) and Wyatt Kolb (36, 20:24).

“Austin Woehr has gotten faster each meet and is really turning in some great runs as he continues to secure a varsity position,” Bridges said.

Kolb also recorded his fastest time of the season. “Wyatt took a big step forward on Saturday as he is really starting to figure out how to put together the second half of the race,” Bridges said.

Fatima’s junior high runners also enjoyed a strong meet. Harper Moeller led the girls with an eighth-place finish in 17:17, followed by Violet Backes (12, 17:44). Both earned medals.

“Harper and Violet both were able to push through some discomfort late in the race to secure top-15 spots,” Bridges said. “Their determination on Saturday was impressive.”

For the junior high boys, Brenden Helton placed fifth in 14:17, while Bane Schaben finished 10th in 14:46, and TJ Lange was 38th in 17:06 in his first cross country race. “Brenden ran from a strong position from start to finish, while Bane had an incredible second half of the race to move up 12 runners in the final mile,” Bridges said.

Lange also made an impression in his debut, moving through the field during the second mile and finishing 38th among 79 runners. “TJ Lange ran his first cross country race Saturday and showed great toughness and competitiveness that can’t be taught,” Bridges said.

Fatima will look to return closer to full strength Saturday when the Comets compete at Gans Creek.
