Linn ended the regular season last week with a pair of losses, but the progress is evident as the Wildcats begin district play.
“Russellville is a tough place to play, especially on their court warming night,” said Coach John Viehland of Thursday’s 86-53 loss. “We put up 50-plus points but gave up 80-plus on them shooting and hitting 13 three-pointers. It wasn’t the outcome we wanted, but it was a good effort and a lot of good things came out of it, both from our seniors and underclassmen.”
Linn trailed 29-17 after one and 50-30 at the break, but hung around and forced the Indians to continue sharp play.
Craig Laughlin was ready to go, leading the team with 15 points as Gus Peters (6-8 FT) added 10 and Colton Leivian (2 treys) put in eight, followed by Dawson Sprenger, Tony Peters, and Ian Laughlin (2-2 FT), each with four, and Nash Tyree, Hunter Bish, Aaron Starke, and Cody Heckman, each with two. G. Peters posted six assists.
On the rebounding front, C. Laughlin snagged a team-high five, and Leivian had four, followed by Kahne Brandt and Starke (3 each), T. Peters and G. Peters (2 apiece), and Heckman and Peyton Peters (1 each).
On Tuesday, Linn lost to Eugene 57-41 despite a tremendous effort.
“We played our best game of the year with everyone available — no injuries or sickness,” said Viehland. “The seniors played their heart out in front of everyone for their last home game. We were gelling both offensively and defensively. It was awesome to see that in the third, we cut the lead to two points at one time, but injuries to Colton and Gus slowed our run a bit. Overall, it was a great game by both teams.”
Linn shot 40% on the night overall, with a three-pointer and an 8-15 mark at the stripe.
G. Peters led the offense with 13 points, including a 3-5 night at the FT line, as C. Laughlin (3-6 FT) added 11, followed by T. Peters (2-2 FT) with eight, Leivian (4), Brandt (trey, 3), and Starke (2). G. Peters and C. Laughlin each had three assists.
On the glass, T. Peters pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds, and C. Laughlin grabbed seven.
