Osage County Fair will run without carnival attractions; Lions Club seeking ideas, volunteers

LINN    In 2021, during the pandemic, the Osage County Fair did not have a vendor offering a full array of carnival rides and attractions. That was the first and only time in the fair’s history — until now.

Fair Carnival Chairman John A. Klebba confirmed on Monday that the carnival used by the Lions Club last year canceled its participation when Jefferson City decided just after the first of the year not to have a carnival for its 4th of July celebration.

Because the Fourth of July celebration in Jefferson City always precedes the Osage County Fair, the same carnival outfit has gone from Jefferson City to Linn.

Klebba explained that Show Me Amusement, which operated the carnival last year, could not justify traveling from southeast Missouri to Osage County without first providing services in Jefferson City.

Other options are not available. Klebba noted that it has been challenging to find carnival companies, many of which closed for a year or two during the pandemic and haven’t reopened.

“They went a year or two without revenue,” he added. “You can imagine what that does to their viability.”

Carnie King Entertainment, owned by some of the people affiliated with Southern Fun, initially agreed to provide inflatable bounce houses and limited carnival rides, but has since shut down operations. It provided rides at the fair several years ago but has since run into difficulty because the matriarch passed away, and the majority of the carnival is tied up in probate.

Lions Club members are considering alternative activities, including a punt, pass, and kick competition and an outdoor archery tournament.

“We’re looking for ideas for kids’ activities,” Klebba said. “If anyone is interested, we’re open to ideas and volunteers.”

Klebba added that food vendors will replace eating options on the midway but said there may not be funnel cakes.

Klebba hopes this is a one-time problem and that the fair can find a suitable arrangement moving forward.
